Status Update
Containment of the Airport Fire continues to improve, with fire managers reporting that 81 percent of the perimeter is now secure. Today, drones equipped with infrared technology will scan drainage areas with dense vegetation for any remaining heat. If hotspots are detected, ground or air crews will be sent to address them.
As unified command prepares to hand off management of the fire to a Type 3 Incident Management Team based out of Cleveland National Forest tomorrow, backhauling of equipment and supplies is a priority.
Suppression repair crews are continuing to restore dozer lines and other areas affected by firefighting efforts. Additionally, a Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) Team is on-site to evaluate how the fire has impacted local watersheds. The team will analyze changes in water runoff and the potential effects on waterways, communities, and aquatic wildlife, initiating mitigation efforts as needed.
A closure order remains in effect for the Trabuco Ranger District of the Cleveland National Forest. Firefighters have reported hikers and mountain bikers entering the closed area. Please refrain from entering these zones or using firelines constructed during the response. More information can be found here: Cleveland National Forest Alerts.
Additionally, Southern California Edison will begin replacing damaged power poles and lines along Ortega Highway starting Tuesday. Helicopters will assist with pole placement during low-traffic times, but drivers should be prepared for possible delays. Plan accordingly to avoid extended wait times.
